THE PRODIGAL RUNEKEEPER
Desiree stared at her mother, who stormed away next to an empty kiosk machine. She slouched down beside it, and put her head down, her hands covering her face.
"Desiree." Willow began, a mask of reserve seemed to engulf her alabaster countenance."I think you laid it on your mother pretty thick there? I mean,it's pretty much a given , if I say so myself."
Holding her stomach, Desiree had an overwhelming sensation that her organ had become as solid as a rock. The fact that she'd taken out all the years of anger towards her mother because of her actions, sown the seeds of contrition for the older woman.
"I guess you're right," she said softly, realizing her friend had a point. "I admit, I was kinda harsh towards my mother." She paused, and gave a sidelong glance at Genevieve, Abraham, and Ebony, and then added, "What do you guys think? Was I too harsh?"
"To be fair," Genevieve began, "She was absent in your life when you needed her the most. Then again, she's here now."
"And your point is?" Desiree queried, rolling her emerald eyes and crossing her arms over her chest.
Genevieve sighed. "My point is maybe, just maybe should give her the benefit of the doubt. By all appearances, she seems to at least make an effort to reconcile and own up to her actions. In my opinion, accept her olive branch and bury the hatchet. Isn't that part of being the Runekeeper, forgiving people and helping them find their way back on the road to redemption?"
A part of Desiree, the older soul within her was fully aware of the fact that harboring anger would only lead to heartbreak and ruin. If she was ever going to save herself and the remnants of humanity as a whole, she needed to let go of the animosity for her mother that had been festering in her heart for over a decade.
"By all means, I know we merely met each other this night," Abraham said, "but I have to say considering the current state of affairs happening of late, you never know when you're time's up to make things right with family. Isn't that right darling?"
"Wait a sec?" Ebony breathed. "Ginny, did I hear you correctly? Are you kidding me? S-She's the Runekeeper? I mean, I've heard so many tales --- I thought you was nothing more than a myth."
Desiree smiled. "Um, i guess the cat has been let out of the bag, so to speak."
"We're in the presence of a real. live superheroine," Ebony said, laying a hand over her heart. "If I had myself a pencil and paper I'd ask for your autograph. Even a photo might even better. Suffice to say, I don't have a camera on me either."
Desiree heart was racing. She never suspected that the story of her legendary family's history of Runekeepers had spread over to her world. She shook out her hands in an effort to relax once the initial shock had passed.
